Vrijwilligerswerk
Dit was voor mij de tweede keer helpen als vrijwilliger, achter de bar bij Bar 21 (voorheen Bar 5) als schenker. Ik vond het vorig jaar zo ontzettend leuk en zo'n leuk team. Ik heb mij hierdoor direct opnieuw ingeschreven toen dit kon. Ik zag veel mensen die er vorig jaar ook waren en dat maakt het extra gezellig.
Op vrijdag heb ik van Biertraining.nl les gehad over hoe ik een biertje moet tappen. Er komt blijkbaar meer bij kijken dan enkel dat kraantje open en dicht kunnen doen. Er is een reden dat je het glas er niet meteen onder mag doen. Eerst moet namelijk het propje eruit. Direct daarna moet je hem eronder doen, want anders is het verspilling van het bier. Hoe lager je hem houdt, hoe meer schuim je maakt.
Twee vingers dik
Vroeger is mij verteld dat je twee vingers schuim moet krijgen. Dat je er invloed op had hoe je dat kon krijgen, wist ik nog niet. Je moet het glas eerst schuin houden en pas op het einde langzaam rechter houden. Wanneer je het glas neerzet, mag dat niet direct onder de kraan. Er zit namelijk een deksel van schuim op het bier en door het druppen uit de kraan zal deze kapot gaan.
Schuimkraag
Het is belangrijk om het koolzuur onder de schuimlaag te houden, om de frisheid te bewaren. Wanneer de deksel kapot gaat, dan zal ook het koolzuur ontsnappen. Ook wil je de juiste verhouding van schuim hebben, zodat men niet na twee glazen al vol zit. Tijdens de training, die gegeven werd door Erik, mocht ik ook mijn allereerste biertje tappen. De eerste sloeg natuurlijk nergens op, maar die tweede waren we beiden trots op.
Foodtrucks
Er stonden boven ook een aantal foodtrucks en ik ben daar vrijdagavond even wezen kijken. Helaas heb ik hier geen Lángos gehaald. Wel heb ik de curryworst bij Grill Saloon gegeten. Dit was wel even lekker na een aantal uur werken. Ook stond er een stand van Bozu, een energiedrankje met alcohol die wij aan de bar ook verkochten. Lidl had ook een eigen standje waar je een spel kon spelen en een shirt kon winnen.
Optredens
Dit jaar waren er vier podiums neergezet. Ik stond zelf natuurlijk beiden dagen achter de bar, maar af en toe ben ik kort bij een optreden gaan kijken. Hierdoor heb ik een stukje van Meau en Davina Michelle kunnen zien. Guus Meeuwis en Chef'Special heb ik kort met voorbij lopen mee gekregen.
Groot neergezet
Guus Meeuwis klink live gewoon ontzettend goed. Chef'Special nam een moment om ons als vrijwilligers te bedanken, natuurlijk super fijn. De rest heb ik helaas niets van mee kunnen krijgen. Dit had deels te maken met de nieuwe indeling van de podiums, maar ook omdat er direct naast ons een andere tent stond. Toch stonden er in totaal meer dan 40 acts op te treden.
Buitenevent
Aangezien het evenement buiten is, is het altijd spannend wat het weer zal doen. Vrijdag hebben wij goed weer gehad, ondanks dat het in de avond al een beetje koud was. Zaterdagmiddag hadden wij even regen, maar gelukkig heeft dat de pret niet bederft. Mensen bleven komen bij onze bar. We waren zelfs de bar met meest verkochte bier en beste gedraaid.
Meer bekenden
Ik ben er ook weer veel bekenden tegen gekomen. Aangezien ik er vroeger een jaar naar school ben geweest en jarenlang in de buurt heb gewoond, komt hier alles een beetje samen. Dat is Appelpop voor mij ook nog steeds: gezelligheid met veel bekenden.
Silent Disco
Voor het allereerst was er naast de extra podiums ook een Silent Disco. Ik vond dit bij Castlefest eerder dit jaar al ontzettend leuk en wilde dus eigenlijk wel heel even daar heen gaan. Gelukkig kregen wij zaterdagochtend te horen dat er voor de vrijwilligers een afterparty was met Silent Disco.
Afterparty
De DJ was ook dezelfde als bij Castlefest, namelijk Richie Lager (en jawel, ook weer op kanaal blauw). Het was erg leuk en gezellig om met een aantal van ons na te genieten van onze goede dagen Appelpop. We konden drinken halen en ook de snackbar bleef open.
Volgende editie
Natuurlijk wil ik er volgend jaar ook weer graag bij zijn. Ons groepje van nu Bar 21 is gewoon ontzettend leuk en gezellig. Dit was pas mijn tweede jaar, maar er waren veel mensen die er vorig jaar ook waren. We hebben gelukkig ook leuke barhoofden, Charlotte en Rick. Dit jaar waren er zo'n 750 vrijwilligers.
Vrijwilligers
Helaas is het wel nodig om veel vrijwilligers te hebben op dit soort evenementen. Enkel op deze manier zal alles vloeiend blijven verlopen. Zo krijgen de bezoekers de beste ervaringen. We draaien volle diensten (zaterdag zelfs een dubbele vaak), krijgen een kleine maaltijd in de avond en twee snacks. Toch doen we dit met veel plezier. Lijkt dit jou ook iets, dan is er altijd een mogelijkheid je ook op te geven.

Volunteer Work
This was my second time volunteering, behind the bar at Bar 21 (formerly Bar 5) as a pourer. I had so much fun last year and such a great team. Because of this, I immediately signed up again when I could. I saw many people who were there last year, which made it even more fun.
On Friday, I took a lesson from Biertraining.nl on how to pour a beer. Apparently, there's more to it than just opening and closing the tap. There's a reason you can't put the glass under the tap right away. First, the cap has to come out. You have to put it under immediately afterward, otherwise you'll waste beer. The lower you hold it, the more foam you'll create.
Two fingers thick
I was told in the past that you should get two fingers of foam. I didn't know that you could influence how to achieve that. You have to tilt the glass at first and only gradually straighten it at the end. When you put the glass down, don't do it directly under the tap. There's a foam cap on the beer, and dripping from the tap will break it.
Foam Head
It's important to keep the carbonation under the foam to preserve freshness. If the cap breaks, the carbonation will escape. You also want the right foam ratio so that people aren't full after two glasses. During the training session, which Erik gave, I also got to pour my very first beer. The first one was obviously ridiculous, but we were both proud of the second.
Food Trucks
There were also a few food trucks upstairs, and I went to check them out on Friday evening. Unfortunately, I didn't get any Lángos. I did eat the currywurst at Grill Saloon. It was really nice after a few hours of work. There was also a Bozu stand, an alcoholic energy drink that we also sold at the bar. Lidl also had its own stand where you could play a game and win a shirt.
Performances
This year, four stages were set up. I was behind the bar both days, of course, but I occasionally briefly watched a performance. This allowed me to see a bit of Meau and Davina Michelle. I briefly caught Guus Meeuwis and Chef'Special as I walked by.
Large-scale performance
Guus Meeuwis sounds incredibly good live. Chef'Special took a moment to thank us volunteers, which was great, of course. Unfortunately, I didn't catch anything else. This was partly due to the new stage layout, but also because there was another tent right next to us. Nevertheless, there were over 40 acts performing in total.
Outdoor Event
Since the event is outdoors, it's always exciting to see what the weather will bring. We had great weather on Friday, even though it was a bit chilly in the evening. We had a bit of rain on Saturday afternoon, but luckily that didn't spoil the fun. People kept coming to our bar. We even had the best-selling beer and the best DJs.
More Familiar People
I also ran into a lot of familiar faces. Since I went to school there for a year and lived in the neighborhood for years, everything kind of comes together here. That's still what Appelpop is for me: a good time with lots of familiar faces.
Silent Disco
For the first time ever, in addition to the extra stages, there was also a silent disco. I really enjoyed it at Castlefest earlier this year and really wanted to go there. Luckily, we heard on Saturday morning that there was an afterparty with a silent disco for the volunteers.
Afterparty
The DJ was also the same as at Castlefest: Richie Lager (and yes, on channel blue again). It was really fun and enjoyable to reminisce with a few of us about our great days at Appelpop. We could get drinks, and the snack bar stayed open.
Next edition
Of course, I'd love to be there again next year. Our current group, Bar 21, is just incredibly fun and friendly. This was only my second year, but there were a lot of people there who were there last year. Luckily, we also have great bartenders, Charlotte and Rick. This year, there were about 750 volunteers.

Unfortunately, it's necessary to have a lot of volunteers at these kinds of events. This is the only way everything will run smoothly. This way, visitors get the best experience. We work full shifts (often even double shifts on Saturdays), get a small meal in the evening, and two snacks. We still enjoy doing this.
